Computational Intelligence
Efficient learning, adaptive algorithms, and optimization for systems operating with limited data, energy, and compute.
VIEW AREA →Research at the physical–digital boundary
CIES Laboratory advances computational intelligence, embedded electronics, and autonomous systems through research grounded in real-world constraints.
Research domains
Our program follows information from the moment a system senses its environment to the moment it makes and executes a decision.
Efficient learning, adaptive algorithms, and optimization for systems operating with limited data, energy, and compute.
VIEW AREA →Hardware-aware intelligence connecting signal acquisition, embedded electronics, and dependable real-time processing.
VIEW AREA →Machines that perceive uncertainty, make transparent decisions, and act safely alongside people.
VIEW AREA →How we work
CIES follows a prototype-led workflow: define a measurable question, build the smallest useful system, evaluate it under constraints, and document what can be reproduced.
Frame a precise research question around real sensing, computation, energy, latency, or control constraints.
Translate the hypothesis into a working hardware–software experiment with observable behaviour.
Measure accuracy, robustness, resource use, failure modes, and reproducibility—not only headline performance.
Publish research notes, methods, limitations, and reusable artefacts when they are ready for public review.
Research programmes
The laboratory currently develops concept studies across four mutually reinforcing programmes.
CI-01
Learning and optimization methods designed for limited compute, energy, memory, bandwidth, and labelled data.
ES-02
Signal acquisition, embedded processing, and reliable inference pipelines that preserve useful information close to the source.
AS-03
Adaptive control and decision systems that expose uncertainty, operate safely, and degrade predictably.
HS-04
Interfaces and collaborative decision tools that keep human intent, oversight, and accountability inside the loop.
Collaborate
CIES welcomes conversations around prototype research, applied evaluation, reproducible experimentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
